Let’s Bust Some Myths: What Is a Nonprofit?

At ALASI, we sometimes hear honest questions from our clients like: “If you're a nonprofit, why do you charge?”
So, what is a nonprofit?
A nonprofit is an organization that exists not to make a profit, but to serve the community. Every dollar we receive goes back into programs that support families, youth, and individuals not into anyone’s personal account.
ALASI doesn’t have private owners. We are guided by 14 volunteer board members who ensure we operate within all legal and ethical standards, and we have 2 dedicated staff members who carry out our mission every day. In the U.S., nonprofits must follow strict financial and legal rules that require transparency and accountability.
Why do we charge for some services?
Being a nonprofit doesn’t mean everything is free. It means we rely on three main sources of income:
Grants – from foundations and other nonprofits
Donations – from individuals and employers
Service fees – from clients and providers
The money we receive covers real and necessary expenses like: staffing, training and development, materials, office operations, program and other costs. Just like any household, we have bills to pay. As a nonprofit, we only charge what it costs to provide a service never more. When we receive full funding, we’re often able to offer services at no cost. Most importantly, we never deny support based on someone’s ability to pay.
What about corruption?
Many in our community come from countries where corruption is common, even within charities. In those countries, corruption is not just the expected or the norm but it may be a survival tactic, and that experience shapes how people view organizations, and we completely understand that.
At ALASI, we are committed to earning and keeping your trust. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Our finances and expenditures are reviewed regularly, our grants have strict reporting requirements, and our Board of Directors, 14 local community leaders, oversees and approves our budget every single month.
We talk openly about our financials and decisions. If you ever have a question—just ask us. Trust is something we build, together!
The truth is: ALASI opens its doors because of YOU.
We don’t receive a steady or guaranteed budget. Without donors, grants, and community support, we simply couldn’t:
Connect employers with job seekers
Connect consulates and people
Host workshops, mobile clinics, Cafés en el Parque, Día de Muertos, festivals, Voces Vivas, and more
Collaborate with local providers to strengthen our community
Help families access legal support
Provide interpretation for wellness appointments
Support families through emergencies
Assist children with school registration
…and so much more
Your belief in us keeps the lights on—and the doors open.
Let’s keep building something truly beautiful, together.
Support. Volunteer. Donate. Share.
Every action brings us closer to a stronger, more united community.
