How Do We Protect Belonging? | ¿Cómo protegemos el sentido de pertenencia?

Buenos dias Comunidad! One year ago, Festival Latino looked very different. Instead of music, dancing, and celebration, we gathered for Juntos We Stand after making the difficult decision to cancel a tradition our community had celebrated for more than a decade. That evening, we said: “This is not a festival, but it is a statement. It is not a party, but it is a promise.” A promise that we would not abandon one another, that we would not allow fear to define our community, and that even in difficult times, we would continue walking juntos.

That day, we stood int he amphitheater with heavty hears but hopeful minds to consider some important questions: Who among us feels safe? Who does not? And what can each of us do about it?  We shared that belonging is more than a celebration. Belonging means knowing that your neighbors will stand beside you when things are difficult. It means creating a community where people protect one another’s dignity, where every culture is valued, and where everyone has the opportunity to call this place home. And in one year, we have seen how Dubois County has risen to the challenge.

A year later, we carry that promise back to Festival Latino. We return with music, food, dancing, culture, families, and joy but also with a deeper understanding of what this celebration represents. Festival Latino is not only about celebrating Latino culture. It is about celebrating the county we are building together: one where our differences enrich us, where we choose connection over division, and where belonging is something we actively create for one another.

A true sense of belonging can only exist when the entire community helps protect it. It takes neighbors, schools, employers, churches, organizations, public servants, families, and friends choosing to stand together not only when it is easy or festive, but especially when someone among us feels afraid, isolated, or uncertain that they belong.

So this year, we invite you to come back to Festival Latino and continue standing with us. Come celebrate. Come dance. Come eat. Come meet your neighbors. Most importantly, come help us keep the promise we made one year ago: we will not abandon one another. We will protect one another’s belonging. We will keep building a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, contribute, and belong. Juntos, we stand. Hace un año, el Festival Latino se veía muy diferente. En lugar de música, baile y celebración, nos reunimos para Juntos We Stand, después de tomar la difícil decisión de cancelar una tradición que nuestra comunidad había celebrado durante más de una década. Esa tarde dijimos: “Esto no es un festival, pero sí es una declaración. No es una fiesta, pero sí es una promesa”. Una promesa de que no nos abandonaríamos, de que no permitiríamos que el miedo definiera a nuestra comunidad y de que, incluso en los momentos difíciles, continuaríamos caminando juntos.

Ese día nos reunimos en el anfiteatro con el corazón pesado, pero con esperanza, para reflexionar sobre algunas preguntas importantes:

¿Quiénes entre nosotros se sienten seguros? ¿Quiénes no? ¿Y qué puede hacer cada uno de nosotros al respecto?

Compartimos que pertenecer significa mucho más que participar en una celebración. Pertenecer significa saber que nuestros vecinos estarán a nuestro lado cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles. Significa crear una comunidad donde las personas protejan la dignidad de los demás, donde cada cultura sea valorada y donde todos tengan la oportunidad de llamar a este lugar su hogar. Y durante este último año, hemos visto cómo el condado de Dubois ha respondido a este reto.

Un año después, llevamos esa promesa de regreso al Festival Latino. Regresamos con música, comida, baile, cultura, familias y alegría, pero también con una comprensión más profunda de lo que representa esta celebración. El Festival Latino no se trata solamente de celebrar la cultura latina. También se trata de celebrar el condado que estamos construyendo juntos: uno donde nuestras diferencias nos enriquecen, donde elegimos la conexión por encima de la división y donde el sentido de pertenencia es algo que construimos activamente los unos para los otros.

Un verdadero sentido de pertenencia solamente puede existir cuando toda la comunidad ayuda a protegerlo. Se necesitan vecinos, escuelas, empleadores, iglesias, organizaciones, servidores públicos, familias y amigos que decidan mantenerse unidos, no solamente cuando es fácil o cuando estamos celebrando, sino especialmente cuando alguien entre nosotros siente miedo, aislamiento o incertidumbre sobre si realmente pertenece.

Por eso, este año los invitamos a regresar al Festival Latino y a continuar caminando junto a nosotros. Vengan a celebrar. Vengan a bailar. Vengan a comer. Vengan a conocer a sus vecinos. Y, sobre todo, vengan a ayudarnos a mantener la promesa que hicimos hace un año: no nos abandonaremos. Protegeremos el sentido de pertenencia de cada persona. Seguiremos construyendo una comunidad donde todos tengan la oportunidad de salir adelante, contribuir y pertenecer.
